Summary

• The Radiation Therapist is responsible for the technical aspects of radiation therapy, placing emphasis on accuracy, treatment, radiation safety, simulation, simple dosimetry, and patient care / education. • Educating and monitoring students and other health care providers. JOB SPECIFIC

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of all equipment functions, including all supplementary appliances. • Delivers accurately the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy with minimal supervision. •
  • Maintains and submits daily accurate patient chart information, charges, and schedules. • Recognizes the first signs of complication of other adverse developments of patients and knows when to withhold treatment until the physician is consulted. • Explains procedures to the patient and means of communication during treatment and procedures to follow if an emergency arises during treatment. It is the responsibility of the therapist to continually assess the immediate needs and conditions of assigned patients. •
  • Demonstrates knowledge in obtaining verification films and simulation films. •
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the physician's prescriptions and treatment plans. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Certificate, Associate Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree required from a Radiation Therapy Program that is programmatically accredited or part of an institution that is regionally accredited. • Experience in Radiation Therapy, 1 year minimum REQUIRED LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS: •
  • Current American Registry of Radiological Technologist (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy. •
  • Current license from the Texas Medical Board – Medical Radiologic Technologist – General Certificate •
  • Current CPR certification SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Knowledge of “Radiation Therapy Practice Standards (ASRT)” and practices in accordance with them. • Knowledge of all aspects of Radiation Therapy to include: therapeutic equipment functions and operations, quality control, and technical billing, and patient care. • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care. INTERACTION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS: • The Radiation Therapist must interact with all departments of the hospital as it pertains to oncology care. PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES: • Extremely heavy physical effort (lift/carry 50 lbs or more). Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies. Manual dexterity and mobility, and intermittent exertion when performing treatments. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Attention to detail. Proper body mechanics. Near visual acuity and depth perception to perform set-ups and examine images for pertinent detail. Color vision: ability to distinguish and identify different colors.
