Job Title: Medical Technologist Cost Center: Laboratory Job Description: The Medical Technologist is responsible for performing analysis on clinical specimens, providing accurate information to physicians, assuring the quality of test data, providing physicians with information on the validity and significance of test results and procedure development. Minimum Qualifications o Education o A baccalaureate degree from a NAACLS accredited medical technology education program required after 1995. Associate degree from a NAACLS accredited medical laboratory technician/clinical laboratory technician with the experience listed below required. o Credentials o State Required: None o GPRMC Required/Preferred: Certification is required, within first year of hire. ASCP certification is preferred but can be obtained through the following: MT Certification or eligible from ASCP (American Society of Pathologists), AMT (American Medical Technologists). Certification received in the year 2004 or later must maintain a minimum of 36 contact hours of continuing education every three years. Physical Demands 1. Stand and/or walk constantly. 2. Sit frequently. 3. Bend, stoop and kneel occasionally. 4. Reach overhead to floor occasionally. 5. Lift 50 pounds floor to shoulder occasionally. 6. Carry 50 pounds 10 feet occasionally. 7. Push and/or pull 50 pounds occasionally. 8. Visual acuity, color vision, manual dexterity and eye coordination within normal limits. 9. Use computer keyboard frequently. Essential Functions 1. Demonstrates safe and competent use of equipment and software to carry out duties. Includes; accurate entry of patient information and specimen information into software systems such as LIS and EMR. 2. Prioritize workflow by medical necessity and priority. 3. Performs testing ensuring that instrumentation is operating within established guidelines, including maintenance and troubleshooting as assigned 4. Performs testing according to procedure manual including appropriate specimen and complying with all age specific related requirements; Reports results in accordance to priority of the specimen and with appropriate quality assurance and quality control 5. Provides appropriate turnaround time on Laboratory testing and communicates with appropriate caregivers when delay in testing occurs. 6. Performs phlebotomies and urine drug screens as requested including special collections. 7. Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective efficient and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of Laboratory quality indicators and outcomes. Such activities may include participating in professional organizations or attending instrumentation training. 8. Assists in writing and documenting new procedures and implementing new instrumentation. Reviews procedures as requested. 9. Maintains inventory levels. Receives, labels, and restocks inventory 10.
