Summary:
Position Summary
The occupational therapist shall be responsible for providing a full range of occupational therapy including assessment, treatment planning and therapeutic interventions in an interdisciplinary environment consistent with the position’s qualifications, professional practices and ethical standards. The occupational therapist shall also demonstrate accountability for and contribute to program development, quality improvement, problem solving and productivity enhancement in a flexible interdisciplinary fashion. The occupational therapist will work in a psychiatric setting overseeing the recreational department of both the State and Private inpatient psychiatric hospital, which includes patients served in a civil and forensic capacity.
The occupational therapist will oversee a team of activity directors and/or recreational personnel. The occupational therapist will be responsible for integrating into the treatment plan to drive the recreational aspect of the patient’s care. The Occupational Therapist will provide training and education and ensure the department maintains safety standards in accordance with hospital accreditation standards.
Position Education/ Qualifications
- Graduate from an approved four-year bachelor’s degree program; Master’s or Doctoral Degree preferred
- Current OT license required
- Current BLS Certification required Adult & Geriatric rehab experience is preferred CPI certification required within 30 days of hire. Must be able to be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues. Good written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to read, write and speak English Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians Prefer hospital experience
Job Knowledge/Experience
Three to five ( 3-5 ) years in-patient rehab experience is strongly preferred. Requires strong communication and organizational skills. Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment.
Must present a professional image. Requires working with frequent interruptions.
Responsibilities
- POSITION RESPONSIBILITES: Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices Participate in pre-admission screening as requested and according to policy and procedure as well as treatment team meetings Conduct initial assessment. Choose appropriate assessment tools, adaptive equipment and material/props used in the assessment based on the age and developmental level of the patient. Patient assessment is completed and in the medical record as outlined in policy & procedure. Data is recorded in the appropriate areas. Develop individualized treatment plans. Short- and long-term goals are written objectively and are measurable. Time frame for goal achievement is documented where appropriate Interventions are selected/documented based on assessment results and are appropriate for age, cognitive abilities and/or development level of the patient. Interventions are selected/documented and applied to support the interdisciplinary rehabilitation plan as evidenced by goal achievement. Consults with physicians regarding referrals for other services as needed. Uses positive feedback to promote patient participation in their rehabilitation program. Patient response to the treatment plan is evaluated as evidenced by patient achievement of goals and/or goal revision, the treatment plan is updated as needed. Information is provided to patient/family regarding status, program planning and discharge plans throughout the rehabilitation program. Weekly progress notes and discharge summaries are completed according to policy & procedure. Integrates family members into the treatment, educational and discharge planning process for a safe transition home, and to ensure continued care needs are met. Participates in clinical staffing and provides/seeks input to/from others on patient care. Function as a resource for and provide team members with in-service/cross-training on occupational therapy knowledge and skill areas.
- Provides education to staff over topics related to the occupational wellness of hospital patients Participate in quality management activities, attend meetings, and uses reports/data to improve quality of care delivered. Submits data as requested. Participate in continuing education/professional development activities. Attends external professional growth activities as scheduled and communicates information to the team. Assist with the development of student programs as requested. Students are provided with education coordinator/instruction as needed.
- Provides supervision and overall guidance of the recreation/activity department and employees within the recreation department, including employees hired to assist with future programs that are developed as part of hospital expansion initiatives Assigns tasks and schedules to recreation staff including recreation or activity coordinators assigned to work in both the private as well as the state behavioral health units Monitors and supervises documentation by recreation staff in both state and private psychiatric units Monitors and provide clinical supervision of the recreation staff during group or individual recreation classes
- Provides revisions and updates to the hospital programming schedule as needed to ensure therapeutic and clinical goals are aligned with programming Develops, reviews and updates written processes and procedures relevant to hospital programming including future programs that are developed as part of expansion initiatives Attends and participates in community education/promotional activities as requested. Maintain competency, licenses/ certifications, and memberships in applicable professional organizations.\ Leads the hospital fall prevention initiatives and works as part of the administrative team to ensure data and required reporting is submitted when necessary Integrates with leadership team to provide feedback and assist with the development of new programs or hospital expansion initiatives The competency/skills assessment is satisfactorily completed annually Works with the therapy department to advance recreational and therapeutic activities that promote wellness in daily living
