Position is 7/70, 10-hour days. Works in collaboration with department physician. Must have the ability to care for pediatric patients.

Summary

The Trauma Surgery Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to critically injured patients in the emergency, operative, and intensive care settings. The PA/NP works collaboratively with trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and multidisciplinary teams to evaluate, stabilize, and manage acute trauma cases and support recovery.

Job Description

Perform rapid and comprehensive assessments of trauma patients in the emergency department and ICU.

Order and interpret diagnostic tests including labs, X-rays, CT scans, and other imaging studies.

Assist in surgical procedures and trauma resuscitations as appropriate.

Manage preoperative and postoperative care, including wound management, pain control, and monitoring for complications.

Coordinate patient care transitions, including transfer to rehabilitation or other care facilities.

Provide patient and family education on injury, treatment plans, and recovery expectations.

Participate in trauma rounds, multidisciplinary case conferences, and quality improvement activities.

Document all assessments, interventions, and patient progress accurately and promptly.

Adhere to trauma protocols and guidelines to ensure high-quality patient care.

Participate in trauma research and continuing education to maintain clinical competency.

Qualifications

For Nurse Practitioners - Completion of a master’s, post-master’s, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice.

For Physician Assistants - Master’s or Baccalaureate degree. Successful completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors. Successful completion of the national certifying examination and current certification given by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).
Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
