Overview The Radiology RN is to Assist with all required procedures in the Radiology Department and to provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with policies and procedures. No supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities Assesses and diagnoses patient and family needs in order to provide quality care to assigned patients. · Identifies discharge planning needs of patient/family/significant other at the time of admission. · Develops, discusses, and communicates a plan of care for each patient during the procedures. · Develops patient/family/significant other teaching per procedure standard. · Assembles necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment prior to start of case. · Checks for availability and proper condition of necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment. · Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient. · Assess patient laboratory values, allergies, and contraindications to administer oral contrast to patients prior to radiology examinations. · Documentation during special procedures, including but not limited to, biopsy, drains, injections and Fluoro. · Pre-and Postoperative duties for special procedure patients. · Collaborate and assist the Radiologist and/or Interventional Radiologist with special procedures. · Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications. · Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used meds: action, dose, and side effects. · Collaborate with pharmacy to ensure patient medications are appropriately administered · Observes five R’s for administering meds: right patient, right drug, right dose, right method, and right time. · Demonstrates proper procedures in all methods of medication administration. · Administers blood and blood products following hospital policy and procedures. · Initiates and maintains IV access according to hospital policy and procedures. · Assesses and documents IV per unit standard. · Applies and monitors principles of aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period for Interventional Radiology. · Acts as a scrub/circulating nurse during the intraoperative phase. · Ensures safe transfer/transport of patient to and from Interventional Suite. · Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to policy and procedure. · Ensures safety of patients during the use of electrical equipment. · Evaluates the identified problems, care provided. Patient’s responses are reassessed to meet patient and family needs to assure overall quality of care delivered. · Reassessment of plan of care is done per procedure. · Based on reassessment, plan of care will remain the same or be modified to meet the patient/significant other’s identified needs. · Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, to ensure quality care. · Nursing assessment is complete and accurate per procedure. · Accurately reflects nursing interventions and medical plan of care. · Flow sheets and I&O sheets must be accurate and signed with name and title. · Medication administration record must reflect full signature and title of nurse administering med, time given, reason for omission, and site for injection (if applicable). · Discharge plan accurately reflects patient and/or significant other’s ability to manage care after discharge. Referrals are made based on identified needs. · Interagency communication referral forms are complete and accurate. · Demonstrates proper documentation of narcotics. · All areas of the procedure documentation form are complete. · Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development. · Functions as a role model for current and new staff. · Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the Radiology Department as defined in the scope of service, to assure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. · Performs other duties as assigne Qualifications Education · Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Minimum Work Experience · Two years of clinical experience, Cath Lab or Critical Care preferred. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities § Current license by the KY Board of Nursing as RN. § BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications.
