Position Highlights

SUMMARY:  The individual in this position will work as a pharmacy assistant/technician, supporting the functions of the Bon Homme Pharmacy and St. Michael’s Hospital Avera.  The individual will carry out the duties listed below in a manner consistent with the mission, values and philosophy of the corporate sponsor, St. Michael’s Hospital Avera.  This individual will perform the assigned duties in a manner which produces a positive and productive work environment for clients and co-workers. The individual in this position will be responsible for maintaining his/her pharmacist technician certification.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrate care and concern for the patient/client/co-worker

  • Greet in a friendly, helpful manner
  • Assist in recognizing patient/client’s need for consultation by the pharmacist
  • Maintain a professional image
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary business information as directed by common courtesy, HIPAA regulations and St. Michael’s corporate standards of conduct
  • Interact with co-workers in a professional manner

B. Perform duties in a competent, professional manner

  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, fill bottles/unit dose packages with prescribed tablets and   capsules, and type labels for bottles.
  • Deliver medications on occasion
  • Assist the registered pharmacist in the preparation and dispensing of medications
  • Distribute medications after registered pharmacist’s approval
  • Screen medication orders for completeness and authenticity
  • Process records of medication and equipment dispensed in the manner practiced: computer,   hand written entries, cash register, etc.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies.
  • Count stock and enter data in computer to maintain inventory records
  • Assist the registered pharmacist in the identification of patients who desire counseling to optimize the use of medications
  • Control inventory of medication and equipment according to established plan
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and follow infection control procedures
  • Initiate, verify, assist in adjudication of, and collect payment or initiate billing for pharmacy services and goods
  • Follow applicable policies and procedures as well as laws and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy technicians

PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPENTENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of common dosage and dosage forms of medications for  pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Consistently practice proper aseptic technique while preparing sterile products and demonstrates knowledge of individual product stability.
  • Consistently use proper hand washing techniques.
  • Consistently practice confidentiality of patient/client information and other healthcare related information.
  • Consistently follow inventory procedures and restock needed items.
