A Brief Overview
The Payroll Analyst is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll compliance across multiple tax jurisdictions, including federal, state, and local levels. This role supports Avera's payroll function by managing filings, registrations, reconciliations, and audits, while staying current on evolving tax laws and regulations. The analyst collaborates with internal departments and external agencies and systems to analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and provide recommendations to resolve discrepancies, support audits, and ensure the integrity of payroll data.
What you will do
- Monitor and interpret federal, state, and local payroll regulations to ensure accurate and timely filings and payments.
- Register new entities for payroll tax accounts, maintain existing accounts, and close inactive jurisdictions as needed.
- Perform regular reconciliations of payroll data to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Lead quarterly, annual and any special payroll process activities including W-2 generation, corrections, and amended returns by preparing recommendations, validating results and coordinating a plan of action.
- Lead analysis of payroll data, validating accuracy between various systems and integration processes to ensure integrity of the information.
- Complete payroll processing for a minimum of one Avera entity and serves as backup for additional facilities.
- Test payroll system updates related to changes, system enhancements, and organizational pay practice modifications.
- Compile and analyze payroll data for internal and external audits such as workers’ compensation, excise tax, and other regulatory reporting, ensuring adherence to internal control standards.
- Respond to inquiries from tax authorities and internal stakeholders, resolving payroll issues and notices.
- Document payroll processes and identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Associate's in accounting, payroll systems, tax regulations, business or related field.
- Knowledge of federal and state payroll tax compliance and reporting
- 4-6 years Experience in multi-state payroll processing.
Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:
- Bachelor's
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) - PayrollOrg Upon Hire or
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) - PayrollOrg Upon Hire
- 7-9 years Experience in multi-state payroll processing.
