Overview The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for the supervision of nursing services to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient patient care. As a member of the Management Team, this position is responsible for assigning, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating clinical care within the assigned nursing unit(s). Performance in this role is evaluated using objective and measurable criteria, including the development, competency, and performance of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and other personnel assigned to the unit(s) under the Clinical Nurse Manager’s supervision. The Clinical Nurse Manager reports to the Nurse Manager or designee and provides direct supervision to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, nursing service clerks, monitor technicians, and other assigned personnel. This position maintains frequent interaction with employees, patients, patients' families, visitors, and members of the medical staff. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and evaluate unit goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and standards of care that contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives. Oversee and coordinate the activities and job duties of assigned personnel to achieve quality outcomes, customer/patient satisfaction, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with budgetary objectives. Incorporate Total Quality Management principles into daily operations and patient care activities. Assign work to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, unit clerks, monitor technicians, and other personnel as needed to meet patient care objectives. Ensure continuity of patient care through effective staffing assignments based on staff competency, education, training, and patient care needs. Develop effective communication among personnel, physicians, and other employees to promote continuity, coordination, and collaboration in healthcare delivery. Maintain proficiency in applicable technologies and make informed recommendations regarding new services, products, and equipment. Interview, select, evaluate, discipline, and terminate personnel, or recommend such actions, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Ensure assigned employees receive appropriate orientation and required in-service education to maintain licensure, certification, and competency. Maintain personnel records and related documentation as required. Develop and manage work schedules, including vacations, leaves of absence, call-ins, call-offs, and other staffing needs. Direct and supervise employee relations activities within the assigned unit(s). Attend management meetings and participate in the development of management and supervisory policies and procedures. Apply advanced clinical knowledge and serve as a role model and resource to nursing staff, including providing direct patient care as necessary. Direct, oversee, and assist in the delivery of patient care. Assist during emergency situations as needed. Train new and existing personnel through instruction and demonstration of safe and effective work practices. Assist assigned personnel in performing tasks and procedures when needed. Assist staff in the adjustment, operation, or testing of new equipment during installation and implementation periods. Provide support to assigned personnel to ensure patient care needs are met without interruption. Fill staffing gaps as needed to maintain safe patient care until additional personnel are available. Perform or assist with clinical treatments, procedures, and total patient care that require advanced skills and professional judgment in accordance with established standards of care. Perform patient care duties not otherwise assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Education Graduate of an approved school of nursing and maintain a current, unrestricted nursing license in the state of employment. Preferred Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred. Required Experience Minimum of two (2) years of relevant nursing experience with demonstrated management potential and proficient clinical skills. Preferred Experience Five (5) years of relevant nursing experience preferred.
